As we enter the new year, the world is witnessing changes in all sectors, from upcoming technology to environmental sustainability. We’ve put together a few emerging trends that have been mentioned at exhibitions and in the news, and think they will be hot topics that are set to shape the course of the water industry in 2024!
Desalination
In an era where water scarcity is a growing concern, desalination is taking centre stage as an emerging solution. We’re utilising water more than ever, and with only around 3% of the world’s water classified as freshwater, the need for alternative sources is a growing concern. Desalination, the process of removing salt from seawater, is evolving with a dual focus on reducing costs and minimising environmental impact.
Cutting-edge approaches in desalination include the integration of low energy options to support reduced energy costs. A key advancement in this process is the innovation of seawater membranes, promising enhanced features and a reduced environmental footprint whilst delivering purified water.
PFAS
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have become a cause for concern due to their increasingly widespread use in everyday products and persistence in the environment and detrimental effects they have on the human body. We go into more detail about PFAS here. America has been paving the way in terms of their regulations on battling the presence of PFAS, with Europe learning and following suit. With news outlets such as the BBC and The Guardian starting to report the impact these harmful chemicals have on humans and the environment, the public are beginning to understand that solutions are needed to tackle these right away.
Removing PFAS is a difficult task, but we provide solutions that have been proven successful at removing these ‘forever chemicals’ here.
Phthalates
Another synthetic chemical, phthalates, are used in the production of plastics and it’s important to be aware of the environmental implications associated with the use of them. These chemicals can leach into water sources, posing potential risks to the environment and human health, such as damaging reproductive, neurological, and developmental systems in humans.
Manufacturers and consumers should prioritise products that are phthalate-free, and, by doing so, contributions to a cleaner and safer water supply will be made. This means the importance of product transparency and responsible manufacturing processes has never been more important, encouraging the use of alternatives that minimise harmful impact.
