Case Study – Devotedly Discus

Chlorine and Chloramine Reduction for Tropical Fish

Devotedly Discus are widely regarded as one of the UK’s premier distributors. Primarily focused on adult Discus, they stock a huge range of strains from German breeder Diskuszucht Stendker.

Mark Evenden, the owner at Devotedly Discus, is both an industry expert and a passionate enthusiast.  He is often called upon within the industry for advice and has even written several articles for Practical Fishkeeping magazine.

Discus require very specific living conditions as they are a Tropical Fresh Water Fish. Most tropical fish require a temperature of 24-26°C, whereas Discus thrive best between 28-30°C. It is also imperative that the water is of the highest possible quality and free from both Chlorine and Chloramine as Discus are highly intolerant to both these chemicals.

Chlorine in water reacts with the living tissues within fish, in particular the gills causing acute necrosis in fish. Gill necrosis if left untreated can lead to respiratory difficulty and even death.

Fileder have worked in partnership with Mark at Devotedly Discus for several years now, helping him to develop a range of products to suit the aquatics industry.

Utilising Pentair No10 Housings for his set-up, Mark uses the SPECTRUM SSP 1um pre-filter for particulate control, followed by the SPECTRUM PCB, reducing Chlorine and more importantly Chloramine levels to a minimum.

The filters can be used to prepare small amounts of water for a water change, but do also have capacity to be used on larger systems / aquariums on a constant feed / drain set up.

Established for over 35 years, Fileder Filter Systems is one of the largest independent process filtration and water treatment supplier in the UK. A wide range of filtration and water treatment products are available to order for next day delivery, including carbon blocks, pleated and depth cartridges, housings and RO systems.

Here at Devotedly Discus we use the SPECTRUM SSP sediment filter to remove particulate from tap water and the SPECTRUM PCB carbon block to remove Chlorine, Chloramines and dissolved organics. We tend to utilise these cartridges on a daily basis as they offer an extremely cost effective method of water preparation that will provide your fish with the water they need to thrive.
