Case Study – PPG Architectural Coatings

Pseudomonas Reduction

PPG approached Fileder Filter Systems after discovering microbiological issues in their towns water. In particular they required pseudomonas to be dealt with as the presence of this in paint production process can lead to a dirty, earthy smell and ultimately high batch wastage. Fileder provided a 2 stage, duty/standby system, which incorporated SPECTRUM PSP and PPPES cartridge filters which delivered Log 7 reduction on the harmful Pseudomonas.

Water based paints are susceptible to bacteria carried in mains water, with the ever tightening of legislation with regards to the use of biocide and biocide addition levels, we needed to expand our toolbox.

Fileder presented a very simple easily managed solution with their two stage filtration system. By installing two banks of two filters one at 1.0μm and one at 0.2μm which filter out the bacteria from the mains water before it enters the plant, the system is on pressure sensors linked to the process control system which alerts when to change the filters, swapping from bank one to bank two and then simply replacing the spent cartridges.

PPG state that the secondary advantage is that the additional biocide, included in their paint for long term in-can protection, is not only being used to clean up the water but will enable PPG to reduce the amount of biocide and promote a better choice of safer biocides.

Fileder Filter Systems is one of the largest independent process filtration and water treatment supplier in the UK. A wide range of filtration and water treatment products are available to order for next day delivery, including carbon blocks, pleated and depth cartridges, housings and RO systems.
